We’re living in a clown world. Lia Thomas, a biological male who is undergoing medical transition, has been the center of a contentious debate regarding trans-identified individuals and sports, particularly women’s sports. FINA, the international swimming federation, has “committed to the separation of Aquatics sports into men’s and women’s categories according to sex.” This means trans individuals who want to compete professionally with their gender identity must prove they began medical transition before Tanner Stage 2 or before the age of twelve. Yahoo! Sports called it the “fairest solution.” This is where it gets weird for me: what is the problem that requires a solution?
